Frequently Asked Questions

What is Aiki-Jujutsu?
Historically, Aiki-Jujutsu was the unarmed martial
art of the Samurai elite. It is an advanced form of Jujutsu and is
over 800 years old.
Aiki-Jujutsu is the father of modern day Aikido.
What is Senso-Ryu Aiki-Jujutsu?
"Senso-Ryu" (War Style) is the name of our
style of Aiki-Jujutsu. Senso-Ryu Aiki-Jujutsu is an
extremely effective and well rounded system of self defense that
incorporates all types of combat - based on the arts of the Samurai
taught in a traditional manner for today's world.
Arts taught at the Sensokan Dojo:
Jujutsu - Art of grappling.
Kenjutsu - Art of the sword.
Aiki-Jujutsu - Art of spirit and
harmony. Higher level form of Jujutsu.
Broken down into categories:

Hard Technique - A series of techniques designed to
inflict injury or death to an opponent utilizing various strikes,
kicks, throws, etc.

Soft Technique -
A series of techniques designed to
inflict pain in order to immobilize an opponent or neutralize an
opponents attack without permanent injury.

Projections -
Projections or "throws" primarily used to
redirect an opponents attack either onto the ground or into
another attacker using the momentum of their attack.

Weapons Training -
Training
with classical weapons such as the Katana (sword) and the Bokken
(wooden sword) for the development of balance and control as
well as the forging of courage.
We also train in defense against knife, gun,
club, etc.
Control Techniques
- The control techniques are the highest level of techniques of Senso-Ryu
Aiki-Jujutsu and are taught only to advanced students. They deal with
the internal and external physics of controlling one's opponent
in single or multiple attack situations. Meditation plays a key
role in mastering the control techniques.
Zen Meditation - Meditation is perhaps the
most important aspect of our art.
Without an internal training such as Zen meditation, martial arts
are nothing more than aerobics. Zen allows us to remain
relatively calm in stressful or dangerous situations, thus
allowing the techniques and principles that we have learned
through repetition to
"come out" when needed. Without this internal training, the
average person, when confronted with
violence, will freeze in fear and none of their techniques will be
there regardless
of any previous martial art training.

Do you teach children?
We only accept adults 18 years or older into
the Sensokan. We rarely have anyone training under the age of 21.
How much is the tuition?
Monthly tuition is $125 a month in cash. $250 is
due at sign-up which covers your first 2 months of training. After
the initial 2 months, you will then pay monthly. No contracts.
A new student must attend 2 classes a
week?
You are required to attend 2 classes a week.
Classes open to the novice student are Mon, Thurs, & Fri. You must
attend 2 but are welcomed to all three.
Do you accept beginners?
Yes, of course. We welcome any adult willing to
learn.
What is your ranking system?
You wear a white belt until you are black belt.
We then follow the traditional Menkyo licensing system.
How long does it take to get a black
belt?
If a
student attends 2 classes a week (2 hour classes each), the level of
"Black Belt" can be attained in approximately 4 years. The Black
belt, while representing a high level of proficiency in our system
is only the beginning of advanced training. It is not the end of
training by any means.
Which is the proper spelling - Jujutsu,
Jujitsu, or Jiu jitsu?
Jujutsu. All other spellings are common
mispronunciations.
"The word jujutsu is often spelled as
jujitsu,
ju-jitsu or jiu-jitsu, this is due to an incorrect
translation of the Japanese writing system which uses ideograms, to
languages which use an alphabet. When the martial art spread to
foreign countries the word jujutsu was adopted to describe it,
although in many cases the romanization wasn't known at the time of
adoption so it was written down phonetically."

Can I watch a class?
We do not allow anyone to watch a class as
this is a private dojo. We only teach adults and adults do not like
to be stared at while training. This is something that you will
appreciate after becoming a student.
Do you participate in tournaments?
No, this is not a sport. This is a traditional
martial art born of battlefield killing techniques passed down for
centuries. Far too dangerous for sporting events and
tournaments.
Do you offer seminars or training on
DVD's?
Martial arts cannot be learn via DVD or at
seminars. A martial art can only be learned by studying for years
under a Sensei along with other students. There are no shortcuts.
How do I join the Sensokan Dojo
Indianapolis?
Joining is easy. Remaining a student takes
dedication and determination. The first 2 months of training, which
you pay for in advance, is a probationary period. If you try your
best, attend your required classes, and respect your fellow
students, you will then pass the probationary period and be
welcomed as a novice student by Hanulak Sensei.
We take accepting new students into the Sensokan
very seriously. We would hope that you do the same.
